What is Stem Cell Therapy?Stewart G. Eidelson, M.D.
Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and can divide (through mitosis) to produce more stem cells. In other words, a stem cell is a cell that will ultimately develop into a special purpose cell in the body.
Adult Stem Cells already exist in your body to help regenerate cells and healing. They lie dormant in different parts of the body, such as the bone marrow. They “activate” when they receive a signal that your body has suffered some type of injury – inflammation is a trigger.
Stem cells normally "follow the leader"..., stem cells follow platelets – tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding – to the injury site. Once there, platelets release proteins to regulate the inflammation and stimulate new cell growth. Stem cells then begin to change into the type of cell that was damaged to help with healing.
Unfortunately, the number of stem cells in human beings begins to decline shortly after birth. This reduction is the reason why our body shows more wear and deterioration as we get older – the fewer stem cells lead to less effective healing.
Stem cells themselves are already widely used in medicine. Bone marrow transplants are a form of stem cell therapy. Promising stem cell therapies are being researched for various treatments associated with back pain.
